The piece has an impressive provenance: the tiara originally belonged to Betsy Whitney, an American socialite and sister-in-law of Franklin D. Roosevelt. She wore it to a ball at Buckingham Palace in 1957, which she attended as the wife of Jock Hay Whitney, who was ambassador to the court of St. James.
