Pitt to open 2022 season against West Virginia at Heinz Field

After embarking on its most successful season in 40 years, Pitt football will look to sustain success in 2022. After the ACC released its members’ conference schedules on Monday night, the Panthers now have a roadmap to return to an ACC Championship Game.

Pitt will play each team in the Coastal Division and Louisville from the Atlantic Division. On top of its ACC opponents, Pitt will start its season with four straight out of conference opponents — West Virginia, Tennessee, Western Michigan and Rhode Island.

Pitt will open its season at home with the Backyard Brawl against West Virginia on Sept. 1 — the first time the two rivals will meet since 2011. This game will also be a primetime game played on Thursday night at Heinz Field and air on ESPN. This will be the only game not happening on a Saturday, barring any changes.

Tennessee and Rhode Island will also come to Pittsburgh, while the Panthers will take the road for their game against Western Michigan. The game against the Rhode Island Rams will be the first time Pitt has played Rhode Island. Head coach Pat Narduzzi played linebacker for the Rams from 1987-89.

The Panthers will open ACC play on Oct. 1 against the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Pitt has traveled to Atlanta for the past three seasons, but the Panthers will welcome the Yellow Jackets to Pittsburgh in 2022.

The Panthers will welcome the Virginia Tech Hokies the following week on Oct. 8 and have their bye after this Coastal Division clash. This will be the first time Pitt will face Virginia Tech’s new head coach Brent Pry as leader of the Hokies.

After the bye, Pitt will take the road for two straight weeks to take on the Louisville Cardinals and the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Cardinals are bringing back redshirt senior quarterback Malik Cunningham while the Tar Heels look to replace NFL prospect Sam Howell under center.

Pitt will then welcome Syracuse to Pittsburgh, making this the 68th straight seasons the two teams faced off.

The Panthers will then travel to Virginia to take on the University of Virginia Cavaliers before returning home for their Senior Day festivities against the Duke Blue Devils.

The ACC saved one of Pitt’s biggest games for last — a matchup with the Miami Hurricanes. The Hurricanes hired former Oregon head coach Mario Cristobal as their new head coach this winter. The Hurricanes are among the favorites to win the division this year and, being so late in the season, this game may decide who wins it. This game will be on the road in Miami on Nov. 26.

‘Want you to succeed’: Pitt’s SBDC helps women-owned businesses

Following a difficult season for her sustainable landscaping business, Judy Foster thought the doors to her business would close for good. But after one final attempt, and with the help of Pitt’s Small Business Development Center, Foster’s woman-owned business found revitalized success.

“We were really struggling in 2017, and there were a lot of things that I didn’t even understand or wasn’t aware of about running a business until I met with the SBDC,” Foster said. “They have a lot to offer, and they want you to succeed.”

Pitt founded the center, which is part of the Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence, in 1979 as a no-cost service to clients working to build their small businesses. The U.S. Small Business Administration named the SBDC as the 2020 Excellence and Innovation Award winner, out of more than 1,000 similar centers across the nation. The SBDC completed more than 7,500 hours of business consulting in 2019, and provided 6,036 hours of counseling to women business owners in the last fiscal year.

Foster, the president of TerraGreen, started her company as a way to apply her sustainable landscaping principles on a larger scale, such as using native plants, limiting chemical use and building green roofs and rain gardens. Foster said she was looking to “embrace the challenges” of starting and running her own company, and to introduce people to the relatively new concept of sustainable landscaping.

“When we started, sustainable landscaping was very rare and a lot of people didn’t know about it or even think of landscaping as sustainable,” Foster said. “Over the last few years the concept has grown pretty quickly, and now about 80% of our clients reach out to us because we are sustainable.”

Foster said the knowledge she gained through SBDC was instrumental in running her business, especially when it came to the technicalities of operating a business. She said despite not having a business degree, the center has given her confidence and understanding in that arena.

“The tried and true formula for working in business is hard work, long hours and a quality product,” Foster said. “Fortunately, we were able to draw on the resources available at Pitt’s SBDC in order to do so.”

Meghan Hillegas, an SBDC management consultant, said the center works with anyone looking to either venture into a small business or receive support for their established business — and women make up a substantial portion of their client base.

“Our goal is to connect the dots for business owners and make sure they are familiar with what is available to them as a business owner,” Hillegas said. “Women make up, consistently, at least 50% or more of our client base year after year.”

Hillegas said the center tailors its services to the individual’s specific needs, instead of trying to use a one-size-fits-all approach. She said the needs of business owners will vary from person to person, and SBDC devotes its attention to meeting those individual needs.

“I work with a lot of women-owned businesses that operate in a predominantly male field, but there aren’t any stereotypicals conversations,” Hillegas said. “Our goal is simply to support the entrepreneur who sees a gap in the market, has a plan to fill that gap, and who is seeking assistance along the way.”

Helen Campbell, CEO and co-founder of Stories Like Me, saw a gap in the market of literature after attending a training session for the national education nonprofit she worked for at the time. Campbell combined her love for books with her interest in topics of diversity, equity and inclusion to found her small business online bookstore, Stories Like Me, with the help of her two daughters.

“Our mission is that every child should be able to see themselves in a story,” Campbell said. “Our goal is to build empathy, and through that to enhance kindness in the world and make it better.”

Campbell registered her business as an LLC in 2018, but her plans moved to the backburner as she dealt with a series of changes in her life. After moving to Pittsburgh in spring 2020, Campbell decided to give the business another try, enlisting the help of SBDC in her journey.

“The SBDC has done a lot of technical work for the business, such as a breakeven analysis and three-year projections,” Campbell said. “They have supported me in building my business plan, connected me with other experts in the area. Now, I have a great team to rely on.”

Hillegas said the center continues to work with its clients even after the business is off the ground — providing the services they need, adhering to their schedule and connecting them to external resources. She said the center has no limit on the number of clients it works with, nor a time frame in which clients must achieve their plan.

“We want to support as many small businesses as possible and we are constantly looking to connect with more resources in the area,” Hillegas said. “As long as there is progress being made, all I ask of my clients is to work towards next steps.”

Campbell said her next steps include securing a loan so she can move the business into a physical space. She said her top priority when searching for locations is the ability to make the building accessible to everyone.

“I turned down so many nice retail places because they wouldn’t or couldn’t make them accessible,” Campbell said. “I’m in the process of working on another, working on closing the deal and securing funding, with the hopes of opening in June.”

Foster said she plans to stay in contact with SBDC in order to continue her professional and personal growth in business. She said learning from others and being open to adapting and growing is one of the most important aspects of running a business.

“Things change all the time and you have to stay up with the new ways, you have to grow and continually learn in order to be successful,” Foster said. “My biggest piece of advice would be to learn from experts on how to succeed.”

Campbell said her business will continue selling books through its website and doing pop-up shops around the City. Campbell said the most influential change she experienced was when she started measuring success in terms of the connections she made, rather than by solely monetary standards.

“Yes, I have my breakeven and all those things that have to work for the business to flourish, but there are other measures of success,” Campbell said. “Look at how you define success, and be willing for something better to happen than you would imagine.”

Lawrenceville Market House showcases local businesses, community

People shopped, ate and drank while bright jazz filled the former Mellon Bank on Butler Street. But 4112 Butler St. isn’t a bank anymore — it’s the location for the Lawrenceville Market House, a newly established retail space.

Brian Mendelssohn founded the Lawrenceville Market House, located on one of the neighborhood’s busiest streets, with his brother Irwin. The Mendelssohns celebrated its grand opening last Thursday, from 4 p.m. to 7p.m.

Market House is anchored by Oliver’s Donuts, owned by the Mendelssohns, and surrounded by Black Cherry Design, Fat Cat Chocolates, Storehouse Neutral, Shop Emily M and Authentically African by Moa, with room for future vendors.

Mendelssohn described the space in many different ways. Sometimes it’s a retail hub, sometimes a mall. Mendelssohn said his idea was to combine coworking and retail spaces, and then market that towards small businesses in the area.

“So the idea is to take the coworking model, apply it to retail and remove all the barriers of entry that a small retailer would have to open up a retail store, especially in a prime location,” Mendelssohn said. “You know, all the things that a real estate developer has to do. They [Mendelssohn’s retailers] just want to do their business.”

The building is an example of midcentury modern architecture in Pittsburgh, which Mendelssohn said is what originally drew him to the property.

“We have very little midcentury architecture, especially really good midcentury architecture in the City here. So getting my hands on one of them was really spectacular and it was great restoring it,” Mendelssohn said. “They built it to be the center of the neighborhood, to make it feel like people could come in and out, with the big glass, and the way it was kind of structured was meant to be a hub. And you don’t want to fight that.”

At the Market House’s grand opening Thursday, seven out of nine of the retail spaces were filled with small businesses. This was accomplished all without the large-scale marketing the Mendelssohns planned for – Brian Mendelssohn said they never got around to it.

“We put the neon up that just said ‘Market House’ and we were so busy through the pandemic and getting this project together and running all of our other projects that we have ongoing, and we just never got around to all the marketing that we intended to do,” Mendelssohn said.

But he also said the lack of marketing was only beneficial in creating intrigue around the space.

“I think that actually created intrigue, it just says ‘Market House’ and it looks cool, and I think that was enough for people to inquire, saying, ‘Well, what is this?’ and then we explain it to them, and they’re like, ‘Alright, sign me up,’” Mendelssohn said.

Erin Smrekar of Storehouse Neutral, a home decor store, said the opportunity to have a physical location has always been a dream for her, so she tries to embody the spirit of the Market House when curating her products.

“This has always been my dream, to have my own thing on a really small level, and to be able to know the people that are shopping,” Smrekar said. “Everything is kind of sourced from all over, but I try and really keep things small. That way you’re supporting another small business in another city, while you’re supporting your own city too.”

Smrekar was born and raised in Pittsburgh, and said she never left. She said she’s been watching Lawrenceville grow the whole time.

“I’ve been in Pittsburgh my whole life, and I just feel like I’ve watched Lawrenceville grow,” Smrekar said. “You could tell there was something happening in Lawrenceville and I kind of always wanted to be here, just knowing the foot traffic drives itself.”

Emi Driscoll, Black Cherry Design’s design studio and retail manager, said Black Cherry Design had a retail space in the past, but the market house was such a special opportunity they couldn’t pass it up.

“There’s so much art, there’s so much going on and I love living down here, walking to work,” Driscoll said. “We found out about this opportunity and thought it would be awesome to have a little retail space.”

Driscoll said her personal goals for Black Cherry Design’s physical location in Lawrenceville was to highlight Pittsburgh artists and makers in a casual way.

“We really emphasize local makers and local artists, and that’s kind of the point of the store. We want to put out a community and make these connections in the community,” Driscoll said. “Emphasizing local Pittsburgh artists, ‘cause I’m an artist myself, and I just think it’s really important to give these people a space to share their work in a casual way.”

For Mendelssohn, he said it all comes back to improving and growing with the neighborhood.

“Understanding the community’s needs and what we can do to make it better has really become a passion over the last 20 years,” Mendelssohn said.

Panthers fall to short-handed Syracuse on the road, 80-72

Pitt women’s basketball (11-10 overall, 2-8 ACC) traveled to the Carrier Dome to face off with Syracuse (9-10 overall, 2-7 ACC) in a battle of contrasting philosophies. The up-tempo, frequently substituting Panthers fought tooth and nail with the Orange, who played just six players, but ultimately the visitors lost 80-72.

Pitt and Syracuse couldn’t be more different in how they play. At halftime, Pitt had 38 rebounds already, 15 of which were offensive, while Syracuse only had 39 in the entire game. Syracuse dominated with guard play and outside shooting, consistently running the ball upcourt and hitting 3-pointers. It shot over 40% from the 3-point line and hit 13 while Pitt shot just 9.5% from the 3-point line and hit just two.

The two rivals were locked into an airtight battle from the tip. Neither team got more than one or two possessions ahead of the other. The Panthers were able to achieve a lead as large as five with a run late in the first quarter, sparked by an and-one and jump shot from senior guard Jayla Everett, with just over a minute left in the quarter. Pitt was winning 25-20 going into the second quarter.

Not to be outdone, the Orange started to slowly crawl back into the game. Senior guards Chrislyn Carr and Christianna Carr closed the half strong for the Orange, scoring six of the last eight points to end the quarter and give their team a 44-39 lead going into the half.

The Orange played an impressive third quarter, continuing to shoot well, while Pitt struggled to match them. The Panthers continued to dominate on the glass and found some success in the paint, but couldn’t close the gap. The Orange took the biggest lead of the night at 63-50 with 3:41 left to play in the third. It seemed like they were going to pull away, but the Panthers answered with an 8-0 run to close the half, highlighted by a 3-pointer from junior guard Destiny Strother, and went into the fourth quarter down 63-58.

As the fourth quarter rolled around, Pitt looked to push back against an Orange squad that had been running ragged all night. The Panthers started to get short-staffed Syracuse into some foul trouble and kept the game close, but couldn’t quite draw even. Every time Pitt got close, Chrislyn Carr or another Syracuse shooter would hit another 3-pointer to keep their opponents at bay.

Besides the poor shooting, the Panthers suffered when sophomore guard Liatu King went down with an injury while diving for a loose ball with just under two minutes left in the game. She didn’t continue to play, but no further information was available about her injury. Syracuse was also able to hit a 3-pointer while King was down on the floor, which put the game out of reach. King scored eight points and continued to dominate the glass pulling down six rebounds in just 12 minutes in the loss.

Pitt once again struggled to shoot the ball, hitting its first 3-pointer in the second half. The Panthers have developed an identity as a successful interior team, but the Orange collapsed on the ball often, while Pitt missed jump shots. Despite the huge rebounding advantage, the Panthers weren’t able to get their interior players enough space to operate, which led to lots of tough layups.

Syracuse’s lights-out shooting made it difficult for the turnover-prone Panthers to stay in the game. Pitt committed 23 turnovers in the loss despite Everett and junior guard Dayshanette Harris being sure with the ball. This was a teamwide issue, as every single Pitt player committed at least one turnover.

Everett had another difficult night scoring the basketball. She shot under 30% from the field and scored 11 points, most of which came in garbage time when Syracuse already had the game in hand. Everett and Harris both struggled with their shots which made it difficult for Pitt to get the offense rolling because they are the primary offensive threats.

Pitt will take on the Duke Blue Devils (13-5 overall, 4-4 ACC) on Thursday at 6 p.m. in the Petersen Events Center. The game will be on the ACCN Extra.

Film festival broadens horizons with European cinema

A film festival this week is giving Pittsburghers a glimpse of cinema across the pond, bringing a selection of European films to the Harris Theater.

The Downtown theater is hosting the EU Film Festival from Jan. 28 to Feb. 3. In-person screenings are available at a price of $11 per ticket, with discounts available for students and seniors. Moviegoers can also choose to skip the big screen — a selection of feature films are available to stream online throughout the festival’s duration.

Allyson Delnore, the interim director for Pitt’s European Studies Center, said exposing students to these films helps achieve the center’s higher purpose.

“Part of our center’s mission is to increase understanding of and awareness about Europe and the world, more generally, and cinema provides a great and easy lens through which to learn about another part of the world,” Delnore said. “It’s a little easier than reading a dry academic text.”

Among the films screened at the festival are “Borderland (Grenzland)” from director Andreas Voigt, which traverses the unique region encompassing the outer limits of Germany, Poland and Czechia. Another is “Perfumes (Les Parfums),” a French comedy-drama directed by Grégory Magne. The festival will also include Q&As with Voigt, Magne and “emerging filmmaker” Simon Elvås.

Regis Curtis, a junior German, French and gender, sexuality and women’s studies major, said he is excited to attend the festival.

“I’m excited to see what happens when people invested in something, in this case, Europe, design and curate a collection of films to watch, which is very different from regular theaters which are first and foremost profit-driven,” Curtis said. “I’m most excited for “Borderland (Grenzland).”’

Delnore said she was ready to see some of the films’ debut before American eyes.

“We have a couple of movies that have never been screened in Pittsburgh before and, in fact, this will be their U.S. debut,” she said. “I’m looking forward to the conversations with the filmmakers.”

A collection of six shorts are also available online for free, each of them finalists in the “MEET EU Short Film Competition.” The contest, which accepted submissions from young adults in Pennsylvania, Florida and North Carolina, encouraged budding filmmakers to explore the theme of “transatlantic connections.” Viewers can vote for their favorite short film out of the selection.

Randall Halle, the director of Pitt’s film and media studies program, said the concept of transatlantic connections was abstract, yet focal to the competition.

“There’s a number of things that we could say about the word ‘trans.’ From my perspective, it shouldn’t imply a movement across to settle in on anything, so I wouldn’t be interested in a film from a filmmaker who is aspiring to pretend to be a European,” Halle said. “But rather, ‘trans’ in the sense of ‘transitive,’ as in bringing two parts of the world together.”

Pitt’s European Studies Center, with help from its counterparts at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and Florida International University in Miami, organized the festival as part of the MEET EU initiative.

According to its website, MEET EU is a program developed by the European Union to foster “a diverse network of future transatlanticists” among United States youth, co-funded by a Getting To Know Europe grant from the EU delegation to the U.S.

Delnore said collaboration with other universities took the festival beyond state borders.

“It’s mostly Pitt that has organized it, but because of our partnerships with other EU centers across the country, we’re able to make it so the virtual festival has more of a national profile, or at least on the East Coast,” she said. “[Halle] wanted to put together a festival that showcases these collaborative film projects and how European cinema explores themes that cross borders but also highlights local and national diversity.”

Halle said American audiences benefit from branching out toward movies made elsewhere in the world.

“They look different than Hollywood. They look different than what you see on Netflix. To watch European film gives you a chance to expand your horizons,” Halle said. “The United States tends to be very insular and isolationist. The majority of Americans don’t have passports.”

To remedy this, Halle said, exposure to European media can be the answer.

“Europe remains one of the places where most of our students actually have real interest in the history, the culture, the economics, the politics,” Halle said. “This opens up the possibility for them to have a momentary window into a different world — 90 minutes to 120, typically.”

There is no shortage of linguistic diversity among the films — moviegoers can hear Czech, Romanian, German, Slovak, Polish, French, Portuguese, Swedish and Italian throughout the festival. Halle said the variety of languages was deliberate.

“In making selections, I tried to match up with the programs we have at Pitt. For instance, Pitt is blessed with one of the few Slovak programs in the United States,” Halle said. “Pittsburgh is also home to Duolingo, and many of our students have gone on to work [there.]”

Halle, who has taught German, said Americans tend to have a monolingual perspective of the United States that isn’t necessarily reflective of reality.

“We have a presumption of English-first and even English-only in the United States, which is absolutely not true. There is no single official language — we use English as the common language, but every language in the world is spoken in the United States,” Halle said. “To understand the people that we live with, we might want to figure out how to attend to other languages.”

Delnore said it was important that American audiences hear these languages represented in media.

“That’s kind of my life’s mission here at Pitt,” Delnore said. “We spend a lot of time trying to foster the teaching and learning of less commonly taught languages … it kind of broadens your perspective — it makes people seem a little less foreign and a little more close.”

Pitt swimming, track, gymnastics set records during busy weekend

Pitt athletes kept themselves busy over the weekend, as every active sport participated in competition. The Panthers competed at home and all over the East Coast. Here’s how they fared in their various matches.

Men’s basketball

The Panthers (8-13, 3-7 ACC) traveled to Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, to take on the Boston College Eagles (9-11, 4-6 ACC), where they lost 69-56. The game was initially supposed to take place on Saturday, but the ACC rescheduled it for Sunday for the same time because of inclement weather.

When the game finally tipped off, the Panthers and Eagles played a close game for the first 10 minutes, until Boston College took a nine-point lead to finish the half 31-22. BC didn’t relinquish its lead for the rest of the contest, and the Eagles won by 13 points.

Boston College junior forward Quinten Post finished with 11 points and 10 rebounds off the bench, and graduate student guard Makai Ashton-Langford finished with 21 points. Pitt redshirt junior guard Ithiel Horton scored 11 points in just his second game this season, and sophomore guard Femi Odukale scored a team-high 16 points.

For its next game, Pitt will travel to Winston-Salem, North Carolina, to face Wake Forest on Wednesday night. ESPN2 will broadcast the game, which will tip off at 7 p.m.

Women’s basketball

Pitt (11-10, 2-8 ACC) concluded its short road trip with a visit to the Carrier Dome and the Syracuse Orange (9-10, 2-7 ACC). After defeating Clemson in overtime on Thursday, the Panthers lost to the Orange 80-72.

Gymnastics

The Panthers (2-3, 1-2 EAGL) participated in a Friday tri-meet in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, which put them up against host No. 25 UNC (6-4, 4-1 EAGL) and the Towson Tigers (5-2, 2-2 EAGL). Pitt came in last place among the three teams with a total score of 194.300, its second-highest score this season. UNC won the event with a 196.000 and Towson came in second with a 195.975.

First year Hallie Copperwheat placed third out of four all-arounders (39.200) behind two UNC gymnasts, first years Lali Dekanoidze (39.450) and Julia Knower (39.325). Pitt first year Sidney Washington was the only other all-arounder and she finished with a 38.625, capped off with a career-high 9.875 on the vault.

Pitt didn’t win at any of the stations, as UNC won the floor routine, and Towson won the other three stations. Pitt came in second on the vault and the floor, and came in last in the uneven bars and the beam.

The Panthers’ next event will take place at the Fitzgerald Field House next Sunday. They will host a quad-meet with NC State, Alaska Anchorage and West Virginia at 2 p.m.

Swimming and diving

Pitt hosted the Western Pennsylvania Invite over the weekend, where the Panthers honored their four senior divers and nine senior swimmers. The other schools that participated were Duquesne, California University of Pennsylvania, Carnegie Mellon, Lock Haven and St. Francis.

The Pitt divers performed exceptionally well — winning every single event. Senior Amy Read set a new school record and a Trees pool record with a 322.50 score on the platform. Junior Dylan Reed and seniors Wesley Ahart and Josh Parquet helped the Panthers sweep the top five spots on the three-meter board. The Panthers also won every swimming relay event on the first day, which included a 1:20.56 time in the men’s 200-meter freestyle. But senior Cooper Van der Laan headlined the first day with a pool record 52.21 seconds in the 100-yard breaststroke.

The second day did not go as well for the Panthers, but they still set numerous personal records. Read came very close to setting another school record, with a personal best 325.60 on the 1-meter board, but she missed it by less than two points. Junior Kate Fuhrmann set a personal record of her own with a 23.13 time in the women’s 50-yard freestyle.

The Panthers will travel to Charlottesville, Virginia, for their final meet of the regular season, when they will compete in the Cavalier Invitational next weekend.

Track and field

The Panthers took a trip down to Fayetteville, Arkansas, and participated in the Razorback Invitational over the weekend. The meet also included Georgia, Iowa, Iowa State, LSU, Mississippi State, Missouri, Oklahoma State, Oregon, Stanford, USC and host Arkansas.

On the women’s side, Pitt first year Caleia Johnson earned a personal best in the 400 meter dash with a time of 56.45 seconds. She finished 24th out of 38 runners, the highest among six Pitt runners in that race. First year Caroline Rusinski also achieved her personal best with a 10:07.33 in the 3000-meter run, good enough for fifth out of nine runners. Graduate student Abena Atuobi shotputted a school-best 15.1 meters, and sophomore Foluke Olujide-Ajibade collected a 18.67 meter throw on the weight throw, her personal best.

For the men, the Panthers’ best race was the 3000-meter run. Sophomores Jack Miller, Luke Henseler and Sam Otis finished in the top-13 of the 26-person race. Miller came in fifth with an 8:09.01, while Henseler and Otis finished with personal bests. Graduate student Lonzell Feagin had Pitt’s best run of the season with a 48.08 time in the 400-meter dash, which finished 20th out of 41 runners.

Graduate student Felix Wolter won the heptathlon long jump with a jump of 7.43 meters, while fellow grad student Noah Walker came in second in the weight throw, with a personal best 21.90-meter throw.

Up next, Pitt will travel to Blacksburg, Virginia, for the Virginia Tech Elite Meet from Friday to Saturday.

Wrestling

No. 19 Pitt (6-4, 1-1 ACC) hosted No. 8 Virginia Tech (6-3, 1-1 ACC) for its second-ranked match in its last three. But unlike its last ranked match against Arizona State, the Panthers couldn’t overcome the Hokies, falling 24-12

Redshirt seniors Elijah Cleary, Jake Wentzel, Nino Bonaccorsi and redshirt junior Cole Matthews all won their bouts in the loss, but VT redshirt junior Mekhi Lewis won the 174-pound bout via technical fall. Redshirt senior Hunter Bolen followed that up with a pin victory against Pitt redshirt senior Gregg Harvey in the 184-pound bout. Those 11 points put Pitt in a hole that it couldn’t recover from.

The Panthers will tussle with UNC on Friday at Chapel Hill, before they come home the following Sunday to host Columbia at the Petersen Events Center.

Level Up! | Game Review: Pokémon Legends: Arceus is absorbing my life

In my last blog, I talked about how my first Pokémon game was “Pokémon Platinum.” Platinum and the games released with it, “Diamond” and “Pearl,” take place in the Sinnoh region, and last year, Game Freak, the company that owns the Pokémon series, announced another game set in the distant past of the Sinnoh region, “Pokémon Legends: Arceus.”

This was a new direction for the series, moving away from turn-based combat and linear progression, to open-world exploration and Pokémon actually physically attacking the player. The main goal of the game is to complete the Pokédex, a record of all the Pokémon in the game and, unlike previous entries in the series, the Pokédex doesn’t update automatically. The player has to catch and observe multiple specimens to get a complete entry, all while some Pokémon attack you.

Game Freak were very secretive about the game, keeping most new Pokémon, characters and what the average gameplay loop — what you spend most of your time doing in a given game —  looked like. People didn’t know how much of this game would be catching or battling or anything about the plot of the game. All in all it wasn’t a surprise when the game leaked and people jumped at the chance to know more about this enigmatic game.

I’m of two minds about spoilers. On one hand, I think the obsession with avoiding spoilers to the extent that actors get their scripts taken from them by men in trench coats is absurd. On the other hand, half the fun of a Pokémon game is discovering the world for yourself, and I feel like a lot of moments I enjoyed would have been ruined if I’d known about them ahead of time.

I do wish Game Freak had given more details about the start of the story, if only so that people didn’t spend months wondering why your character has a cell phone if they’re supposed to be a villager living in what is analogous to the Hokkaido era in Japan. As it turned out, your character is actually sent from the past, alongside their phone, which makes so much more sense.

All this is to say that I was very curious about “Legends: Arceus,” and as soon as I got my hands on a copy Friday, I was absorbed into the game.

Something I’ve never liked about RPGs like Pokémon is when they require grinding — spending time to level up your characters to beat an enemy, usually a boss. I find it really repetitive and it gets boring fast.

Recent games have made this easier with ways to level up more Pokémon at once and in more ways, though I think “Legends: Arceus” takes this a step further. For one thing, the main focus of the game isn’t battling, so you don’t have to worry about your Pokémon being at an appropriate level.

Instead, you spend much more time sneaking around trying to catch Pokémon for research, which requires more care and focus than just mashing a button. The removal of random encounters means you don’t have to go through the trouble of running around an area to hopefully run into the Pokémon you want, you can just see them.

You get money and items while you’re out looking for Pokémon, so even if you can’t find the one you’re looking for, you’re still making some sort of progress. This really contributes to the game never feeling boring, in my opinion.

Here’s an example. One of my favorite Pokémon is Eevee and I spent a lot of time looking for one yesterday. While I was searching, I completed “research tasks” with Pokémon in my party by seeing them use certain moves, I caught and fed other wild Pokémon to improve my score when I went to report my findings and I got items for quests. I didn’t find an Eevee, but I still felt satisfied by the end.

The game really encourages you to do a bunch of different tasks. You have to complete the Pokédex entry for every Pokémon, and the easiest way to do that is by catching a bunch of them. Then, even once your Pokédex entry was complete, by completing all the extra tasks, you get a bonus chance of finding a shiny version of that Pokémon. “Shiny” is the term for rare Pokémon with special colorings, which normally have bad odds of showing up outside of certain conditions, about 1 in 8,192 in earlier games and 1 in 4,096 in later ones.

Shiny Pokémon aren’t better than their regular counterparts stat-wise, but catching one is a badge of pride for most players and I was so excited when I stumbled on one while playing.

“Legends: Arceus” rewards you for doing a variety of tasks making it easy to get sucked into. Friday night I kept thinking “I’ll just do one more thing,” and ended up playing until 3:30 the next morning.

This game is great and quickly becoming one of my favorite games in the series, and I hate when I have to tear myself away from it to do things like homework or eating. It’s that engaging.

Super Specific | The DCEU is in its final death throes

Zack Snyder fans thought almost a year ago they were about to receive everything they ever wanted. The mythical, now real, “Snyder Cut” of the 2017 film “Justice League” was released to the public on HBO Max in March 2021.

Joss Whedon, who was brought in to finish the film after Snyder had to step away from directing following his daughter’s death, had changed the movie drastically.

“Zack Synder’s Justice League” was a clear improvement on the “Justice League” box-office bomb, and though I doubt Warner Bros. would have released Snyder’s four-hour film as it was intended for a theatrical release in 2017, the differences between the two films were stark.

But better as the 2021 version might be, it’s not canon.

Snyder revealed in an interview with Deadline that a condition of releasing his film on HBO Max was that “Zack Snyder’s Justice League” would be considered “non-canon.” Any future films in the DC Extended Universe would follow in the footsteps of Whedon’s version. Warner Bros. made it clear that it wanted nothing more to do with Snyder’s vision of the DCEU.

Many die-hard DCEU fans are also die-hard Snyder fans, and as Snyder directed both “Man of Steel” and “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” it’s no surprise that many fans saw Synder as the mastermind behind the DCEU’s continuity, equivalent to the Marvel Cinematic Universe producer Kevin Feige.

But after the box office and critical disappointment of “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice,” Warner Bros.’ faith in Snyder seemed to waver, and after the failure of “Justice League,” it seems to have cast him out entirely.

Snyder has now signed a deal with Netflix to write, direct and produce his upcoming projects like the “Army of the Dead” franchise, “Twilight of the Gods” and “Rebel Moon.”

All of this is to say that Warner Bros. has no idea what the hell it’s doing — and it’s the DCEU actors and fans who will be paying for it.

Warner Bros. sought desperately for years to reach the critical and commercial success of the MCU, but after hitting the “Justice League” brick wall, it was soon clear that it was beginning to pivot on its strategy.

If you had gone to the DCEU’s Wikipedia page before “Justice League” was released, you would find a slate of movies scheduled, just as interwoven as MCU’s sprawling multiverse. “Cyborg,” “The Flash,” “The Batman,” “Green Lantern” and a plethora of Justice League sequels seemed to be on the horizon.

But only a few of these movies are still in production, and they hardly resemble the films as they originally planned.

Ben Affleck, who was originally slated to direct the Batman movie, stepped down as director in 2017. It was clear by 2019 he would not return to play the role, which was instead offered to the “Twilight” fan-favorite Robert Pattinson. This Batman film, which will be released this March, will be entirely separate from the DCEU.

As if the DCEU was not already as beaten and battered as a street thug in Gotham, any credibility it might have held onto was thrown out the window earlier this month — when Vulture dropped an exclusive interview with Whedon.

“The Undoing of Joss Whedon” is less of an investigation of the abuses the director dealt behind the scenes of “Justice League,” and more of a way to fluff up Whedon’s bruised ego.

The director sees himself as an outcast in Hollywood, once held as a pariah of “nerd-culture,” the writer and director behind nerd-classics like “Buffy the Vampire Slayer,” “Firefly” and “The Avengers” spent most of the interview whining about the plethora of abuse allegations he’d received.

The allegation most relevant to the DCEU comes from Ray Fisher, who starred as Cyborg in both versions of “Justice League.” Fisher first publicly condemned Whedon on Twitter in June 2020 calling his behavior on set as “gross, abusive, unprofessional.” He has since continued to demand an investigation into Whedon’s behavior, and that of “Justice League” producer Geoff Johns and DC Film president Walter Hamada.

Whedon has addressed Fisher’s accusations, claiming Fisher had been pushy with his character’s inclusion in the film when addressing his cut-down storyline after Whedon had done revisions.

Whedon, who was alleged to have purposely brushed aside the storyline of multiple characters of color, even went on to address the accusations of Israeli actress Gal Gadot, who plays Wonder Woman. He claims she misunderstood his intentions and attitude on set claiming she didn’t understand him because, “English is not her first language, and I tend to be annoyingly flowery in my speech.”

The interview was highly criticized, and Whedon’s blatantly pompous and misogynistic comments only seem to have condemned him further. Hopefully, his outsider status will stick, but the damage he’s done to the DCEU can’t be corrected — particularly where Fisher is concerned.

Fisher was slated to star in his own Cyborg film, and co-star with Ezra Miller in the upcoming “The Flash” movie. But “Cyborg” has been canceled and “The Flash” has been rewritten to make space for Michael Keaton, who will return to his ‘80s role as Batman — ousting Fisher from the DCEU in the process.

And where Warner Bros. once hoped for the DCEU to be a hulking multiverse behemoth to rival Marvel, it now claims to be more focused on “individual storytelling.”

Warner Bros. can scream that the DCEU has shifted directions all it likes. The truth of the matter is that it started its universe on shaky legs and fumbled the play once it started to get its footing, ruining what could have been a movie franchise with apparent cover-ups and multiple figures in their organization mishandling the franchise.

I like DC. I really do. Batman and Jason Todd are among my top five comic book characters. But I find it hard to connect with them much anymore.

My mother, who worked for DC in the early 2000s in their marketing department, used to tell me stories about the former DC headquarters building — 1700 Broadway in midtown Manhattan. They had a batmobile in the third-floor lobby, and superhero memorabilia of all kinds scattered around floors three through seven. I wonder how I would feel stepping in such a place now.

While 20 years ago my mother might have walked into DC headquarters, firm in the fact that the Justice League was comics’ most renowned superhero team, today’s fans have abandoned their dreams of a DC media dominance for greener pastures settled firmly in Marvel Studios’ production lot.

Offbeat | Find calm in the craziness with the ‘Common Chaos’ podcast

Life is chaotic, so it only seems fitting that the co-hosts of “Common Chaos” — 23-year-old Brisbane native Cartia Mallan and 27-year-old fellow Australian Ashton Wood — are the disorderly, dynamic duo your podcast library needs.

Having just wrapped up their first season, “Common Chaos” covers the lives and adventures of the two longtime best friends through intimate stories, raw conversations, life tips and lots of laughs.

Both Mallan and Wood advocate for radical self-acceptance and the pursuit of your goals, no matter how unattainable they may appear.

I’ve been following Mallan for years now. I found Mallan’s content in her boho, festival-going phase of life, posting euphoric, kaleidoscopically edited vlogs of her attending Splendour In the Grass, Beyond the Valley and — of course — Coachella. Her lifestyle, travel, fashion and beauty-style videos have led to more than 500,000 followers on Instagram and YouTube. She reminds me of glitter personified as a fiery, carefree, blue-eyed Leo woman.

The Aussie it-girl is just as spiritual as she is sassy — she’s dedicated much of her content to self-growth, detailing her journey with meditation, clean eating, journaling, exercise and mental health. Many of her Instagram captions are beautiful write-ups, equal parts lengthy and lyrical, dialing in on self-love.

In an interview with W Magazine, she relays the nervousness of vulnerability and how gratifying it can be.

“I write these massive captions and it’s scary because you are putting a whole part of yourself out there that is vulnerable,” Mallan said. “But I like to think that if it doesn’t scare me, then my job becomes boring. It’s what I learned in acting school: ‘If this doesn’t terrify you, then why are you f–king doing it?’”

On the other hand, Wood is the calmer side of the chaotic duo. She’s accrued just as large of a following as Mallan and focuses on similar fashion, lifestyle and travel-related content. Launching her YouTube career in late 2014, she’s since grown dramatically on such and other platforms, like Instagram and TikTok, and has representation from Que Models.

Weird thought, but she totally smells like fresh laundry.

Though the laughs rarely end on “Common Chaos,” the duo has had their share in discussing heavy topics. Recently, Mallan’s father unexpectedly passed away, allowing for some brave and grief-stricken episodes. The two navigate this experience in episode five, “Losing A Parent,” and episode six, “Dealing with Grief & Complicated Families.” They explore the complicated relationships the pair of them have had with their fathers throughout life, the physical and emotional manifestations of grief and finding acceptance.

The fourth episode, “Facing Fear,” details how to unpack the fears we experience in daily life, challenge them head on and stop them from preventing your dream life — ultimately transforming it from something debilitating to something motivating.

Other episodes dive into some good old relationship advice, such as episode two, “Let’s Talk Breakups,” and episode eight, “Friendship,” where the girls share their top tips after a split.

They aren’t afraid to dig deep, either, as they touch on past relationship traumas from their teen years and childhoods. Also, both give insightful advice on when to end toxic friendships and romances and how to attract healthy ones into your living space.

Navigating heartbreak is never easy, both romantically and platonically. So leave it to the CC duo to make it a little more manageable.

Some episodes feature guest stars, such as Australian professional footballer Bailey Smith and Swedish influencer-turned-fashion designer Matilda Djerf. In Smith’s episode, they break down the inherent assumptions about toxic masculinity in football and shed light on how athletes can calm the chaos. For Djerf’s feature, they discuss her clothing line, Djerf Avenue, and how she was able to start a business while grappling with relationships, mental health and life in Sweden during the COVID-19 pandemic.

A feature of the podcast I love is their “mantra of the week.” The girls share a phrase or saying they’ve been living by lately and ask listeners to repeat after them. Some of my favorites include, “I inhale courage and exhale fear, there is no better time to start than now,” and “I do not chase, I attract. What belongs to me will simply find me.”

Mallan and Wood have flipped the notion of online influencing — making it less about fame and likes and more about sharing their growth, self-love and having fun. It’s nice to feel like I’m not following them, but rather I’m a friend, just checking in and catching up on their lives.

Their brainchild “Common Chaos” is an excellent blend of excitement and sincerity, perfectly dancing the line between the two. As a result, there are episodes perfectly suited for both a good giggle and a soulful cry.

This podcast is a perfect listen-along and an episodic reminder from its hosts: embrace the chaos and create a life you can’t wait to wake up to every day.

‘Make it in America’: Biden discusses infrastructure after Frick Park bridge collapse

President Joe Biden visited Pittsburgh on Friday to tout his administration’s investment in infrastructure as well as the City’s work in advanced manufacturing and robotics. His visit came in the wake of a Friday morning bridge collapse in Frick Park.

Biden landed in Allegheny County Airport in West Mifflin before taking an unscheduled stop at the site of the collapsed Fern Hollow bridge — which left 10 people injured and seven vehicles, including a Port Authority bus, stranded. He then headed to Mill 19, a research and development facility, in Hazelwood for his scheduled speech.

Photos: President Biden discusses infrastructure following Frick Park bridge collapse

After arriving at Mill 19, Biden toured the facility and lauded the $1.2 trillion dollar infrastructure bill that was passed last year. He used the Fern Hollow bridge as an example of the importance of bolstering the nation’s crumbling infrastructure, saying that the poor condition of bridges across the country is “unacceptable.”

“Across the country there are 45,000 bridges in poor condition,” Biden said. “It is simply unacceptable and that is why your governors and members of Congress have been saying for years that we have to do something about this.”

Biden also said the bridge collapse in Frick Park shows poor infrastructure can “threaten lives.”

“The next time we don’t need headlines saying that someone was killed when the next bridge collapses,” Biden said. “We saw today that it can threaten lives, and as soon as we heard about the bridge we were in contact with the mayor.”

He then touted the $1.6 billion that the infrastructure bill allocates into repairing and rebuilding bridges across the country.

“We finally got it done, a bipartisan infrastructure law that includes the largest investment in our nation’s bridges since the Eisenhower state highway system,” Biden said. “This is the first time in the country’s history that we dedicated a national program to repair and upgrade bridges, and it’s about time.”

Mayor Ed Gainey, who wrote on Twitter that he spoke with Biden about the collapsed bridge, said at Mill 19 that the president’s decision to visit the site of the fallen bridge showed that he has Pittsburgh’s back.

“As the mayor of the City, it made me feel proud that the President of the United States had our back,” Gainey said. “He said that he will do whatever he can to help us restore that bridge so when we talk about infrastructure dollars, and how important infrastructure is this is a prime example of why this bill is so important.”

Gainey added that Friday is a “day of celebration” since so many Pittsburghers came together after the collapse.

“Today is a day of celebration, because as always, when Pittsburgh hits a crisis, we pull each other up and when we pull each other up we build a better city for everybody,” Gainey said.

Prior to Biden’s speech, Gina Raimondo, the United States Secretary of Commerce, said the supply chain issue the nation is facing, including a lack of semiconductors chips, highlights an “economic vulnerability.”

“We are far too dependent on countries halfway across the world to get our chips [semiconductors],” Raimondo said. “That is an economic vulnerability and a national security vulnerability.”

Raimondo further said the country has to increase its manufacturing capability.

“The fact of the matter is, and the president says this all the time, we can’t have a strong economy and a strong country unless we get back into the business of making things in America,” Raimondo said.

Biden said his actions for rebuilding the economy follow a single principle — “make it in America.”

“No one knows that better than all the folks here in Pittsburgh, because making it in America is what built this city, the steel city,” he said.
